SALEM, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad dropped a heartbreaking 10-9 decision at No. 20 Roanoke Saturday afternoon.
The Captains Kaitlin Quigley put her team on top first, just over four minutes into game. Roanoke tied the score with 22:27 left in the first half but CNU reeled off three in a row to take a 4-1 lead with 4:18 left in the opening half. The Maroons scored two of the final three goals of the half but trailed 5-3.
In the second half, RC scored three straight to take a 6-5 lead with 26:58 remaining. Christopher Newport countered with two goals of its own to see-saw back in front, 7-6, with 8:10 to play. The Maroons answered with two consecutive scores to re-take the lead, 8-7, with 5:56 remaining.
CNU tied the game with 4:54 left but Roanoke again took the lead, 9-8, with 2:55 left. Quigley tied the game at 9-all just a minute later but the Maroons scored the game-winner with 28 seconds left for the win.
Quigley led Christopher Newport with three goals. Chrissy Rogers scored twice and Katie Doherty had a goal and one assist. Mea Arnold, Liz Klemens and Morgan Layton all scored once. Meghan Harkey finished with one assist.
Roanoke out-shot the Captains, 27-16. Gayle Robinson finished with 12 saves in the cage.
RC improves to 12-4 while CNU falls to 9-4. The Captains return to action Wednesday when they head to St. Mary's (MD) with start time set for 4 pm.
