Softball Sweeps Methodist, Captures USA South Regular Season Crown

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Christopher Newport's softball squad captured its second straight USA South regular season crown by sweeping Methodist Friday afternoon.

The Captains, with the pair of wins, will be the number one seed in next week's USA South Tournament in Burlington, NC.

CNU won game one, 6-1. The Captains scored three times in the top of the fourth. Emily Garcia drove in two runs when she belted a double and Kristin Nickloy scored the third on run of the inning and an RBI single.

The Monarchs scored once in the bottom of the fifth but CNU pulled way with three more in the top of the seventh.

Taylor Morgan was 3-for-4, Jessie Atkinson and Ashley Mani both went 2-for-4.

Kristen Rowe tossed a complete game, allowing one run on eight hits, walked two and struck out six to improve to 17-1.

Christopher Newport won the night-cap, 6-0.

CNU scored single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings and added three more in the seventh.

Mani finished 3-for-4 while Jessie Atkinson went 2-for-3 and belted her 13th home run of the year. Morgan was 2-for-3, Nickloy went 1-for-3 with three RBI, and Garcia finished 2-for-4.

Lindsay Kelly tossed a complete game en route to the shutout win. She improved to 11-4 while allowing three hits and struck out two.

The Monarchs fall to 16-22 on the year and 9-9 in USA South play. The Captains are now 31-5 overall and 17-1 in conference action.

Christopher Newport returns to action next Friday when they begin play in the USA South Tournament.
