Box Score VA BEACH, VA – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse squad gained its first ever victory over cross-water rival VA Wesleyan, 7-6, Wednesday night.
Trailing 6-5, the Captains came from behind, scoring the final two goals of the game in the final four-plus minutes for the win.
Ryan Merrell tied the game with 4:16 left off a feed from John Glaser. Will Perkins came up with the game winner, off a pass from Justin King, with four seconds left in regulation.
The Marlins and Captains exchanged goals early, with VA Wesleyan leading 3-1 after the first period and 4-2 at the half. In the third, Christopher Newport out-scored VWC 2-1, closing the gap to 5-4.
CNU tied it at 5-5 with 7:08 left and the Marlins re-took the lead with 5:03 to play, setting up the CNU come from behind win.
Perkins and Mike Laycock both scored twice for the Captains. Merrell had a goal and an assist, Matt Gleisner and Rob Koster scored once and King, Glaser, Rob Duca and Zach Hill each had one assist.
The Marlins out-shot Christopher Newport, 43-33. Jackson Tyler stopped 14 shots in the cage.
VA Wesleyan falls to 3-6 while CNU improves to 6-2. The Captains hit the road Sunday when they head to Greensboro with face-off set for 1 pm.
