FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Christopher Newport's men's tennis squad dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Swartmore on the campus of Mary Washington Sunday afternoon.
In singles action, Eric Shulman (CNU) defeated Stephen Youngblood 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1; Kevin Shaughnessy defeated Dusty Nelson (CNU) 6-3, 7-5; Zach Kelm defeated Lorenzo Sison (CNU) 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3; J.J. England lost the first set to Martin Brown (CNU) 6-1 and led in the second set 3-0 when Brown retired due to injury; Mark Wee defeated Dylan Young (CNU) 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5; and Mark Greenburg defeated Thomas Whaling (CNU) 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles play, Nelson and Shulman (CNU) defeated Kelm and Shaughnessy 8-3; Brown and Sison (CNU) defeated Wee and Youngblood 9-7 at No. 2; and John Braig and Whaling (CNU) defeated Greenburg and Maxwell Bressman 8-2.
Swartmore improves to 2-4 overall while the Captains fall to 4-7. CNU returns to action Thursday when they host Salisbury on the CNU Courts at 3 pm.
