Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad saw its two-game winning streak snapped at the hands of 12th-ranked Cortland St., 16-7, Tuesday afternoon.
CNU's Kaitlin Quigley scored the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the start but the Red Dragons quickly knotted the score at 1-1 with 26:00 minutes left in the first half. Quigley scored her second of the game less than three minutes later to put the Captains on top, 2-1.
Cortland however scored five unanswered goals to go up 6-2 with 6:46 left in the opening stanza. Christopher Newport scored twice to cut it to 6-4 with 1:50 left but the Red Dragons increased their lead to 7-4 with a goal less than a second left in the first half.
The Red Dragons took control in the second half, scoring the first six goals to go up 13-4 with 11:25 left in the game. The two teams scored three times each over the final 9:39 for the final margin.
Quigley led CNU with two goals and two assists. Meghan Harkey added one goal and one assist. Katie Doherty, Liz Klemons, Kelsie Dodd and Shayna Sargent scored one goal each. Amy Suddarth had one assist.
Cortland St. out-shot Christopher Newport, 31-21. Gayle Robinson finished with 11 saves in the cage.
The Red Dragons are now 1-0 on the year while the Captains fall to 2-2. CNU returns to action Tuesday when they host Nazareth at 3 pm.
