NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's lacrosse squad dropped a 13-8 rain-soaked contest to Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at Captains Field.

The Captains came out and scored the first goal of the game but the Eagles responded with four straight to take a 4-1 lead early in the second period. CNU cut the lead to two, but UMW scored four unanswered again to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.

Christopher Newport cut the lead to as few as three in the fourth, but that would be as close as they would get, as Mary Washington was able to hang on and close out the win.

Ryan Merrell led the Captains with three goals. Will Perkins finished with two scores. Rob Duca had one goal and one assist, John Glaser finished with one goal and two assists and Rob Koster scored once. Ray Fitzgerald added an assist.

UMW out-shot CNU, 41-25. Jackson Tyler finished with eight saves in the cage for Christopher Newport.

Mary Washington improves to 3-1 while the Captains fall to 1-1. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they host Marywood at 3 pm.
