Softball Sweeps Marlins, Remains Undefeated

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's softball team swept a double-header from Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday afternoon.  The Captains defeated the Marlins by final scores of 5-0 and 8-4.

In game 1 the Captains out-hit the Marlins 8-3, and were let by a complete game pitching effort from Lindsay Kelly.  Kelly went seven innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 8, while only walking two.  Offensively, the Captains were paced by third baseman Jesse Atkinson and left fielder Emily Garcia.  Atkinson put CNU's first runs on the board with a 2-run homer in the second inning; while Garcia went 3-3 with 2 RBI's.

In game 2 the Captains put up a run in each of the first 3 innings, before adding three in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning.  Kristen Rowe threw six innings for the win, giving up three earned runs, striking out six batters and only walking three.  Sarah Tipton threw the final inning and struck out the side to end the game.  Christopher Newport benefited from multi-hit performances by Taylor Morgan, Kristin Nickloy, Renee Ashworth, Felicia Price.  Price and Ashworth had a run scored and an RBI a piece, while Katie Moyers also chipped in with 2 RBI's of her own.

With the win, the Captains improve to a perfect 4-0 on the year, while the Marlins fall to 2-2.  CNU will travel to Bridgewater this Sunday for a double-header slated to start at 1pm.
