Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Christopher Newport softball squad opened the 2009 season by posting 16 runs in two wins Thursday afternoon.
Christopher Newport swept the doubleheader, beating Hampton University twice at Captains Park. The Captains took the opener, 7-5, and won the nightcap, 9-1.
CNU and Hampton stacked up 12 runs and 25 hits in the first game. The Captains plated four runs in the third inning and held on for the 7-5 win. Lindsay Kelly pitched the first six innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits but still managed to get the win.
In the nightcap, CNU scored five times in the fourth and then ended the game with two runs
in the fifth. After shutting the door with a save in Game 1, Kristen Rowe allowed just one run on six hits to pick up the win.
CNU got home runs from Megan Morris in the opener and Katie Moyers in the second game. Also coming up big for CNU was freshman Emily Garcia who went a combined 3-6 with a triple, 2 runs batted in and a run scored in her Captains debut. Lauren Rowley, Kristin Nickloy, Taylor Morgan also helped the CNU offensive attack with multi-hit days.
The sweep allows Christopher Newport to open the season with a perfect 2-0 record while Hampton falls to 2-4. The Captains will host Virginia Wesleyan next Wednesday at Captains Park.
