#3 Salisbury Takes Down Women's Lacrosse in Season Opener

SALISBURY, MD – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse team opened up their 2009 campaign with a tough loss to third-ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday afternoon.  The Sea Gulls defeated the Captains by a final score of 18-8.

SU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 16 minutes, before Alyssa Burke scored the Captains' first goal off an assist from Shayna Sargent.  Salisbury would then score four more goals as the clock approached the final four minutes of the half.  Then in a 12 second span, CNU answered with back-to-back goals from Meghan Harkey, putting the Captains down 11-3 heading into the half.

The Sea Gulls would go on to outscore the Captains 7-5 in the second half for a final score of 18-8.

Second half CNU goals came from, Burke, Sargent, Kaitlin Quigley (2), and Jacqui Williar. SU goalie Sonja Stuart made five saves, while CNU's Gayle Robinson stopped nine Sea Gull shots in the loss.

The game was the first of the season for both squads as the Sea Gull now sit at 1-0 and the Captains at 0-1. CNU will next play their home opener against Guilford on Sunday, March 1st at Captains Field.  Start time is set for 2pm.
