Volleyball Sweeps N.C. Wesleyan in Doubleheader

  NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport volleyball team took control of first place in the USA South with a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

  CNU won the first match, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, after overcoming a 23-20 deficit in the opening set. Junior Caitlin Jansen paced CNU with 16 kills, while freshman Kara Elder, this week's USA South Rookie of the Week, added 14 and had 15 digs. Freshman Cory Harris contributed eight kills and seven digs, while sophomore Jessie Heavenrich added 27 assists.

  In the second match CNU won 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 as Elder drove home 11 more kills and Jansen had nine. Freshman Abby Hogge had 14 digs, junior Ryan Lowery 12 and Harris 11, while Heavenrich chipped in with 19 assists and Lowery had 13.

  The two wins pushed CNU to 19-3 for the season and 12-0 in conference play. CNU has now won 14 straight matches, the fifth longest streak in school history. N.C. Wesleyan slipped to 12-9 on the year and is 8-2 in the USA South.

  The Captains host the CNU Invitational Friday and Saturday, meeting 14-4 Mary Washington, a team they fell to early in the year, at 3:00 Friday and No. 2 ranked Juniata (15-2) at 7:00 Friday.
