No. 4 Salisbury Eliminates Baseball, 5-1

DANVILLE, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball season came to a close Friday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to fourth-ranked Salisbury on day three of the NCAA South Regional.

 

The Sea Gulls stuck first with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.

 

The Captains wasted no time in knotting the score in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Giarrizzi singled with one out and Alex Owen followed with a single of his own, advancing Giarrzzi to third. Trae Bailey doubled, scoring Giarrizzi and advancing Owen to third. Chris Despins struck out and Ryan McDougal grounded out, stranding two.

 

Salisbury responded by pushing across three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. Christopher Newport put two more runners on in the seventh, but could not get a timely hit.

 

In the eighth, the Captains loaded the bases but McDougal went down on strikes. The Sea Gulls would score one more time in the top of the ninth.

 

Owen finished 2-for-3 and Parker Neal went 2-for-4. Giarrizzi and Bailey both had one hit.

 

Kyle Baumann tossed eight solid innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out five.

 

The Sea Gulls improve to 40-3 and CNU concludes the year 29-14.
