FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Christopher Newport's baseball squad split a pair of USA South games at Methodist Sunday afternoon.

The Captains won game one, 5-2, behind the strong arm of Kenny Moreland who improved to 8-0 on the year. The senior right-hander tossed another complete game, allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out eight. It's the first time in his four years Moreland has defeated Methodist.

CNU plated three runs in the top of the third on an RBI single by Alex Owen and a two-run double by Trae Bailey.

In the fifth, Christopher Newport went ahead 4-0 on a bases loaded walk by Chris Despins. The Monarchs scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be as close as they would come. The Captains scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Bailey and Despins both finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Monarchs took the night-cap, 5-3.

Methodist scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and CNU cut the lead in half with a single run in the top of the fifth. In the seventh, Bailey's two-run homer, his sixth of the year, put Christopher Newport ahead, 3-2.

MU, however, scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind for the win.

Bailey, Owen, Giarrizzi, Eric Cole, Thomas Drewry and Travis Medina each had one hit for the Captains.

Steven Millerleile started and went four innings, allowed two runs on two hits, walked six and struck out two. Kyle Baumann suffered the loss in relief, tossing 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits, to fall to 2-2.

Methodist is now 21-10 on the year and 6-4 in the USA South. CNU is 20-7 overall and 8-1 in the conference. The Captains return to the diamond Tuesday when they travel to Randolph-Macon with first pitch set for 3 pm.
