Women's Lacrosse Captures USA South Title, Downs Greensboro, 19-4

BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad captured its third straight USA South Tournament title with a 19-4 win over Greensboro Saturday.

 

The Captains also earn their third straight bid into the NCAA Tournament. First round games begin Wednesday, May 7.

 

CNU took control of the game early as they scored just 37 seconds into the game when Meghan Harkey found the back of the cage. Christopher Newport went on to score eight of the first nine goals and 11 of the first 14 to lead 11-3 at halftime.

 

In the second half, the Captains defense remained solid as it allowed just one goal while the offense scored eight times.

 

Kaitlin Quigley led Christopher Newport with five goals and one assist. Harkey scored four times and assisted on another. Chrissy Rogers and Kylene Jennings both scored twice and had one assist.

 

Katie Doherty had one goal and one helper while Natalie Gilbert, Alyssa Burke, Bonnie Hansen, Jacqui Williar and Dara Gruber all had one goal. Lisa Thomson finished with one helper.

 

Quigley was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Also earning All-Tournament honors were Doherty, Harkey, Thomson, Amy Suddarth, Burke and Giljam.

 

CNU out-shot the Pride, 39-13. Rachel Giljam had seven saves in goal for the Captains.

 

GC finishes the year 5-12. Christopher Newport, with the win, ties a school record for wins in a season with 12, set last year.
