Steven Millerleile improved to 3-2 by allowing two hits in seven innings while striking out a season best nine batters.

FERRUM, VA – Steven Millerleile made sure Christopher Newport's baseball squad took home the USA South regular season crown and top seed in the USA South Tournament by allowing just two hits as the Captains smacked three home runs in a 14-0 win at Ferrum Sunday.

 

Millerleile improved to 3-2 on the year by allowing just two hits in seven innings of work. He walked none and struck out a season-high nine batters. CNU won the game in eight innings. Josh Brinkman pitched a perfect eighth in relief.

 

It's the second time in program history the Captains have captured the regular season crown and the first outright championship ever. Both have come under the direction of current Head Coach John Harvell. Christopher Newport co-tied for the title with Methodist in 2001.

 

CNU scored 14 runs on 17 hits in the win. Every Captain starter had at least one hit. Ryan McDougal led Christopher Newport going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Trae Bailey was 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Chris Despins finished 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored.

 

Alex Owen went 2-for-4 with two driven in, Parker Neal was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Thomas Drewry finished 2-for-5 with three RBI. Eric Cole was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Travis Medina finished with 2-for-4.

 

Ferrum falls to 8-18 on the year and 2-10 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 22-8 overall and 9-2 in conference play.

 

The Captains return to action Thursday in the USA South Tournament. CNU, the No. 1 seed, will play the loser of No. 4 Methodist/No. 5 Shenandoah at 8 pm.
