Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Methodist, 20-4, Captures Regular Season USA South Title

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad captured the USA South regular season title and No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament with a 20-4 win over Methodist Saturday afternoon.

 

It's the fourth time the Captains have captured the title out-right, while tying for the regular season crown once. CNU will meet the winner of the No. 4 Ferrum/No. 5 Shenandoah match in the semifinals of the USA South Tournament next Friday at 1 pm in Burlington, NC.

 

Christopher Newport scored twice in the first minute of play and never looked back. CNU led 12-2 at the break.

 

Celebrating Senior Day, Lisa Thomson led the Captains with four goals and one assist. Morgan Layton scored three times as Meghan Harkey contributed two goals and three assists. Katie Doherty tied her own school record with five assists and she also scored once.

 

Kylene Jennings scored two goals and had two helpers. Jacqui Williar, Chrissy Rogers and Bonnie Hansen each scored twice. Monique DeGraffenreid and Kaitlin Quigley both scored one time.

 

The Captains out-shot the Monarchs, 36-13. Rachel Giljam played the first half and made seven saves. Gayle Robinson played 18 minutes in the second half and recorded two stops. Kristen Duce saw her first action of the season and made no stops.

 

Methodist falls to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in the USA South. Christopher Newport is now 9-5 on the year and 4-0 in conference play. The Captains return to action Sunday when they host Lynchburg at 2 pm.
