Baseball Drops Ferrum, 9-4

FERRUM, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad defeated Ferrum 9-4 Saturday evening.

 

The Panthers struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening frame. The Captains tied it in the top of the second on Ryan McDougal's lead-off home run.

 

CNU opened the game up with three in the top of the third. Ferrum plated single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the CNU lead to 4-3.

 

Christopher Newport responded with three in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3. The Panthers added one in the seventh and the Captains pushed across two more in the top of the ninth for insurance.

 

Alex Owen was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Trae Bailey finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Michael Romett had a pinch-hit, two RBI single. McDougal finished 1-for-5 with two RBI.

 

Kenny Moreland went six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out five to improve to 9-0. Kyle Baumann, Josh Brinkman and Kevin Moreland each tossed an inning in relief. The three combined to allow one run on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

 

Ferrum falls to 8-17 overall and 2-9 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 21-8 on the year and 8-2 in conference play. These two teams will meet again Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
