Baseball Sweeps A Pair Of Games At Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad swept a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Captains won the first game, 12-4, behind 15 hits, including four home runs.

 

The Royals scored twice in the first inning and CNU responded by tying the score in the top of the second. EMU re-took the lead with two more in the bottom of the second, but that would be all the Royals would manage.

 

Christopher Newport scored four in the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth.

 

Thomas Drewry led CNU going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, including a two-run home run in the second. Trae Bailey finished 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in fourth.

 

Eric Cole was 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored and he also blasted a home run when he hit a three-run shot in the sixth. Travis Medina also homered, hitting a two-run shot in the fifth.

 

Josh Brinkman picked up his first win of the year in relief. He went 4 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.

 

Christopher Newport won game two, 13-1, in five innings.

 

Bailey finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cole went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Parker Neal blasted a three-run shot in the second and Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 and Alex Owen was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double.

 

David Acosta pitched all five innings, allowing one run on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. He is now 2-0 on the year.

 

EMU falls to 7-19 on the year while the Captains improve to 18-4. CNU returns to action Thursday when they travel to Hampden-Sydney with first pitch set for 3:30 pm.
