NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse team played its longest game in program history and Bonnie Hansen made sure her team would come away with the victory as she scored the game-winner in triple overtime to lead CNU to a 12-11 win over Buffalo St. Monday afternoon.

Christopher Newport led 7-5 with 20:45 left in regulation, but the Bengals scored four of the next five goals to take a 9-8 lead with 9:13 to play in the second half. Shayna Sargent's goal with 5:58 to play in regulation knotted the score.

The Captains had not trailed in just over 170 minutes, as they came into Monday's game scoring 44 times while allowing just three goals.

NCAA rules state that two teams, playing from two different conferences, must play two three-minute overtime periods, regardless of the score after the first extra session. In the first OT, Buffalo St. scored the only goal and the Bengals took a two-goal lead with 2:13 left in the second OT.

CNU would not give up as Chrissy Rogers' goal cut the lead to one and Meghan Harkey's goal with 27 seconds left in the second OT tied the game at 11-11.

Hansen's game-winner came with 1:37 left to give the Captains their third straight win.

Kaitlin Quigley led Christopher Newport with two goals and two assists. Sargent finished with two goals and one helper and Natalie Gilbert scored twice.

Morgan Layton and Hansen each finished with one goal and one assist. Harkey, Christine Mike, Lisa Thomson, and Rogers each finished with one score. Brooke Falck added one assist.

CNU out-shot the Bengals, 40-38. Gayle Robinson had a career-high 17 saves in the cage.

Buffalo St. falls to 2-1 on the year while the Captains improve to 5-2. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they head to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with start time set for 7 pm.
