NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad won its fifth straight Friday afternoon, rolling to a 15-4 win over Division II Virginia State at Captains Park.

The Trojans struck first with a single run in the top of the first off of starter Steven Millerleile (2-2). It would prove to be the only run he would allow in five innings of work.

The Captains struck for five runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the third and fourth to lead 7-1.

Virginia State tried to stay in it with three unearned runs in the top of the sixth but CNU was just too tough as they plated seven more in the bottom of the inning.  Christopher Newport scored one more in the seventh for the final margin.

Millerleile allowed just the one run on seven hits in his five innings of work. He walked two and struck out one. Kyle Baumann tossed two innings, allowing three unearned runs, and Kevin Moreland pitched a scoreless ninth.

Mike Giarrizzi led the offensive attack by knocking his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the fourth. He finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan McDougal was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Parker Neal and Travis Medina both finished 2-for-4. Trae Bailey went 2-for-5 and scored two runs.

The Trojans fall to 9-14 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 15-4. CNU returns to the diamond Saturday when they host Pace with first pitch set for 12 pm.
