WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad swept a pair of USA South games from Shenandoah, Saturday afternoon.

The two teams decided to play two 9-inning games Saturday instead of one today and one Sunday because of bad weather due in the area Saturday night and Sunday.

The Captains took game one, 7-1, behind the strong arm of Kenny Moreland.

Moreland improved to 5-0 on the year by pitching a complete-game, allowing one run on four hits, walking none and striking out eight. Moreland had a no-hitter going through 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Chris Despins hit his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot in the seventh. He finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a double. Trae Bailey went 2-for-5 with a double and two driven in.

Travis Medina went 2-for-4 and drove in two and Ryan McDougal finished 2-for-4.

In game two, Alex Owen's two-run home run in the top of the ninth broke a 6-6 tie to give CNU the sweep.

Shenandoah trailed 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh until back-to-back home runs tied the score. In ninth, Joey Martin walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Mike Giarrizzi setting up Owen's two-run shot to left-centerfield.

Owen finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Bailey hit his third homer of the year and went 2-for-4 with two RBI. McDougal had another solid outing, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs driven in.

Steven Millerleile had another solid outing on the mound, tossing seven innings, allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out six. Chris Malvagna pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the year.

The Hornets fall to 9-10 overall and 1-3 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 14-4 on the year and 5-1 in conference play. CNU returns to the diamond Wednesday when they head to Hampden-Sydney with first pitch set for 3 pm.
