Baseball Upends Guilford, 14-5

GREENSBORO, NC – Christopher Newport's baseball team dropped home-standing Guilford, 14-5, Monday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.

 

The Captains scored three times in the first, two more in the second and four in the third to take a 9-1 lead.

 

CNU scored one more in the fifth and added four more in the top of the seventh.

 

Kyle Baumann, despite giving up a home run on his first pitch of the game, tossed six solid innings. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three to pick up his second win of the year.

 

Trae Bailey led the Christopher Newport offense going 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored. Chris Despins finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and Matt McDaniel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

 

Alex Owen drove in two, Mike Giarrizzi scored four runs and Travis Medina doubled and scored three times.

 

The Captains improve to 10-3 on the year while Guilford falls to 8-9. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they travel to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
