Men's Basketball Falls 84-71 At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad dropped its first game of the second half of conference play, 84-71, at Shenandoah Wednesday night.

 

The Hornets led from tip to the final buzzer as they snapped their four-game losing streak.

 

SU led by as many 20 in the first half, 36-16, with 5:47 left to play in the first. The Captains closed the half on a 13-3 run to trail 39-29 at the break.

 

CNU trimmed the lead down as few as five early in the second half when they trailed 46-41 with 16:49 left in the game. The Hornets came alive and so did their shooting as Brandon Bryan hit three three-pointers on three straight SU possessions at one point during the second half.

 

The Hornets led by as many as 20 once again in the second half and were able to thwart any late attempt to come back by Christopher Newport.

 

The Captains shot 27-of-67 (40%) from the floor, 4-of-18 (22%) from behind the arc and 13-of-17 (77%) from the line. Davon Barton paced CNU with 19 points and six assists. Conley Taylor finished with 16 points and Thomas Whinnett added 10 and 13 rebounds.

 

Shenandoah finished 31-of-75 (41%) from the field, 10-of-27 (37%) from long range and 12-of-21 (57%) from the charity stripe. Jeremiah Lawrence led all scorers with 25 points and all rebounders with 17. Onyie Onunaku added 14 points and 12 boards and Bryan added 14 off the bench. Stevie Johns contributed 11.

 

CNU falls to 6-14 overall and 2-5 in the USA South. The Hornets are now 13-7 on the year and 3-4 in conference play. Christopher Newport returns to action next Tuesday when they host NC Wesleyan with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
