Russell's Late Three-Pointer Helps Men's Basketball Complete A 69-67 Come From Behind Win Over Greensboro

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's Joshua Russell drained a late three-pointer which keyed the Captains come from behind win Sunday evening, 69-67, over Greensboro in USA South play.

 

Russell received the ball at the top of the key with about two seconds on the shot clock and just barely got the shot off that snapped a 65-65 tie with 44 seconds left in the game. It was the first lead for CNU since the 17-minute mark of the first half. The Pride quickly cut the lead to one on Josh Brown's tip-in with 19 seconds left.

 

The Captains Davon Barton was fouled and went to the line and hit one of two free throws. Greensboro came down the court with an opportunity to tie the score. R.J. Smith missed a lay-up and the Pride got the offensive rebound and promptly turned the ball back over to CNU. Michael Green was fouled and missed both free throws with six seconds left and Adam Nicholson's three-point attempt at the buzzer was off.

 

Christopher Newport trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half. GC led 51-37 with 16:18 left and led by 10 or more for the majority of the second stanza.

 

CNU forced 15 Greensboro turnovers and turned them into 23 points.

 

For the game, the Pride finished 25-of-56 (45%) shooting from the field, 8-of-19 (42%) from behind the arc and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line. Bruce Zamuel led all scorers with 24 points. He also added eight rebounds. Nicholson finished with 16 points and five assists. Josh Brown led all rebounders with 10, he also scored nine points.

 

The Captains finished 23-of-49 (47%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33%) from long range and 17-of-24 (71%) from the line. Barton paced CNU with 18 points. Thomas Whinnett added 16 points and nine rebounds. Russell finished with 12 off the bench and Conley Taylor had 11.

 

Greensboro falls to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 6-13 on the year and 2-4 in USA South play. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they begin the second half of conference play. The Captains will play at Shenandoah with tip set for 7:30 pm.
