FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad dropped a 94-85 decision on the final day of the regular season at Methodist Saturday evening.
The loss snaps the Captains four-game winning streak, the longest of the season.
CNU led by as many as five in the first half several times. The final time came with 5:52 left and the Monarchs closed the half on a 16-9 run to lead 40-36 at the break.
In the second half, MU came out firing as they shot 63% from the field, 67% from behind the arc and hit 26 of 32 free throws.
Methodist led by double digits for the majority of the half. Christopher Newport cut it to as few as six points with six seconds left, but that's as close they would get.
For the game, MU finished 27-of-50 (54%) from the field, 9-of-15 (60%) from long range and 31-of-40 (81%) from the free throw line. Brian Lane and AB Lehman each finished with 21 points. Travis Winstead added 14 and Travis McBryde contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds.
CNU finished 32-of-80 (40%) from the floor, 8-of-24 (33%) from behind the arc and 13-of-17 (77%) from the charity stripe. Michael Green paced the Captains with a career-high 24 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Davon Barton finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Thomas Whinnett added 14 and 10 rebounds while
Conley Taylor totaled 12 points.
The Monarchs finish the regular season 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the USA South. CNU falls to 10-15 on the year and 6-6 in conference play. The Captains will be back in action in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday against an undetermined opponent.
