Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad won its second extra inning game in as many days as Ryan McDougal provided the late inning heroics to give the Captains a 6-5 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in 11 innings Sunday.
The Captains got another solid outing out of senior hurler Kenny Moreland. The right hander went eight innings and struck out 12 while allowing three runs on three hits and walking just one.
Moreland handed the reins over to his brother, Kevin, who could not hold onto the lead as the Griffins scored twice in the top of the ninth to force extra frames.
In the 11th, Mike Giarrizzi walked, Zach Hutchison singled and Trae Bailey walked. After a strikeout, McDougal came to the plate and laced a single to give CNU the win.
Christopher Newport scored four times in the first on three hits and would add another in the bottom of the sixth.
GMC scored three times in the top of the fourth.
Giarrzzi finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. McDougal and Chris Despins each finished 2-for-6 while Ryan Norris was 2-for-5.
David Acosta struck out two in the 11th for his first win of the year.
The Captains are now 3-1 on the year and return to action Wednesday as they host Randolph-Macon with first pitch set for 3 pm.
