Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Arcadia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad split a pair of games Saturday with visiting Arcadia at Captains Park.

 

CNU came from eight down in game one to win, 9-8, in nine innings. The doubleheader was scheduled for two seven inning games.

 

The Knights scored all eight of their runs in the top of the second inning.

 

The Captains scored twice in the bottom of the first and pushed six across in the home half of the seventh to force extra frames.

 

CNU loaded the bases with two outs and drew three straight walks to cut the Arcadia lead to 8-7. Parker Neal scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

 

In the ninth, Neal singled and came around to score on Thomas Drewry's double to right-centerfield.

 

Eric Cole was 2-for-5 for CNU. Joey Martin, Drewry, Neal, Ryan McDougal, Chris Despins, Trae Bailey and Mike Giarrizzi each had one hit in the win.

 

Chris Malvagna started for CNU and lasted just an inning and a third, allowing seven runs, five earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck out one. Steve Millerleile tossed 4 1/3 innings of solid relief. The southpaw allowed one unearned run on three hits and struck out five. Josh Hankins struck out two in one inning of work and Kevin Moreland picked up the win, tossing two scoreless frames.

 

In game two, CNU was the victim of a come-from-behind win as the Knights won 8-4.

 

Christopher Newport scored three times in the first and one more in the second, but could not hold on. Arcadia pushed four across in the fourth, one in the fifth to take the lead and three more in the top of the seventh.

 

Travis Medina finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and Bailey finished 1-for-4 with two runs driven in.

 

Giarrizzi started and threw four innings. The junior lefty allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out four. McDougal threw the final three, also allowing four runs (three earned) and struck out four.

 

The Captains are now 2-1 on the year and return to action Sunday when they host Gwynedd-Mercey at 11 am.
