NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball team avenged an early season loss with a 106-100 win over NC Wesleyan Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

Both teams came out firing as the two squads combined for 100 points in the first half. The Captains led, 54-46.

CNU led 22-10 with 13:54 left in the opening half and the Bishops scored nine straight to cut the lead to three. Seven minutes later, NC Wesleyan cut the lead to one, 36-35. Christopher Newport out-scored the Bishops 18-11 over the final six minutes, which led to the halftime score.

In the second half, Christopher Newport increased its lead to as many as 18, 92-74, with 7:38 left on Thomas Whinnett's lay-up. NC Wesleyan would not go quietly into that good night as they hung around and chipped away at the lead. The Bishops got the lead all the way down to five, with 1:55 to go and four, with less than a minute to play, but could not get any closer.

NC Wesleyan finished 34-of-73 (47%) from the field, 7-of-20 (35%) on three-point attempts and 25-of-31 (81%) from the free throw line. Jarmel Arrington scored 29 of his team-high 31 points in the second half. Trey Drake added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists while Lenny Hall and Adam Coleman each finished with 14. Careem Corbett and Lamont Stokes contributed 10 points each.

For CNU, the Captains finished 35-of-68 (52%) from the floor, 13-of-19 (68%) from long range and 23-of-26 (89%) from the line. Davon Barton finished with a career-high 36 points. He also had six assists and five rebounds. Whinnett had 18 points and 11 boards, Theo Baker finished with 18 and Michael Green had 15 points and eight boards.

The Bishops fall to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference action. The Captains return to play on Saturday when they host Ferrum at 4 pm on Hall of Fame Day.
