Football Holds Off Late Maryville Charge, Defeats Scots 38-31

MARYVILLE, TN – Christopher Newport's football team won its fourth straight Saturday, holding off a late charge to defeat Maryville 38-31 in a USA South contest.

 

Tunde Ogun rushed for a career-best 225 yards and three touchdowns. CNU led 24-7 at the half and scored on its first four possessions to start the game. The Captains led by as many as 21 points twice in the second half.

 

Ogun scored on runs of 37, 18 and 5 yards, accounting for his three scores. Matt Long also fired his first passing touchdown, a 53-yard strike to Ray Grenke. Keith Gaines also threw a TD pass, a 34-yarder to Tony Spradlin. Jay Graham booted a 20-yard field goal to account for all the CNU scoring.

 

Long finished 9-of-17 passing for 150 yards and one score. Gaine was 1-for-4 for 34 yards and one TD. Spradlin caught five passes for 87 yards.

 

Christopher Newport rushed for 292 yards while limiting the Scots to just 40. Maryville threw for 339 while CNU tossed for 185.

 

The Captains defense totaled five sacks and finished with 15 tackles for loss.

 

CNU improves to 4-1 on the year and 3-0 in USA South play. The Scots fall to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Captains return home to host Methodist next Saturday with kick off set for 1 pm.
