NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad upended Maryland Bible, 95-79, in the Captains final non-conference game of the year, Sunday afternoon.
CNU trailed just twice, the final time coming with 17:13 left in the opening half when Maryland Bible led, 7-4. The Captains promptly tied the score at seven on the ensuing possession on Theo Baker's three-pointer and took the lead for good with 16:07 to go on Marko Hamlin's bucket.
MBC was able to stay in the game in the first half by virtue of 25 second chance points. Christopher Newport took its largest lead of the half into the locker room at the break, leading, 51-37.
In the second half, the Captains quickly upped their lead to 18, 61-43, with 17:04 to play on Thomas Whinnett's three. Maryland Bible cut the lead to as few as five, 80-75, with 4:14 left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get. Theo Baker was fouled and drained the bucket and ensuing free throw on the next possession and CNU cruised the rest of the way to the victory, its second in as many games.
MBC shot 31-of-83 (37%) from the field, 5-of-22 (23%) from behind the arc and 12-of-18 (67%) from the line. Terry Hosley led all scorers with 24 points, coming off the bench. Tyler Yanosky finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Tim Squire also finished in double figures with 12.
Christopher Newport was 35-of-71 (49%) from the floor, 9-of-18 (50%) from behind the arc and 16-of-22 (73%) from the free throw line. The Captains finished with six players in double figures, the first time it has happened since Dec. 16, 2006, against Frostburg.
Baker led CNU with 19 points. Conley Taylor and Whinnett each finished with 16, Davon Barton added 13 and nine assists, Michael Green added 11 and Kenny Reid had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Maryland Bible falls to 5-8 overall while CNU is now 4-9. The Captains kick-off USA South play Tuesday when they host Shenandoah with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
