NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad won its first game of the year Sunday afternoon by running past Valley Forge, 100-67.
It was the first time CNU had scored 100 points in a game since January 7, 2006 when the Captains defeated Fisher, 103-72.
Christopher Newport torched the nets, shooting 42-of-70 (60%) from the field for the game and were also 9-of-17 (53%) from long range. CNU was also 7-of-9 (78%) from the charity stripe.
The Captains defense also stepped up and held the Patriots to just 24-of-71 (34%) shooting, including 6-of-25 (24%) from behind the arc and forcing 16 turnovers.
CNU also out-scored Valley Forge 54-30 in the paint and converted those 16 turnovers into 25 points while out-scoring the Patriots, 14-4 in fast break points.
Christopher Newport dominated from the tip as they quickly sprinted out to a 10-point lead, 20-10, with 13:45 left in the first on Conley Taylor's lay up. The Captains biggest margin in the opening stanza came with three seconds left when Paul Going's two free-throws put the Captains ahead 53-33 going into the locker room.
In the second half, CNU would not allow the Patriots to get any closer than 20 points, which came very early in the second stanza. Christopher Newport's biggest lead of the game came with less than a minute to play when Brandon Duke nailed a three-pointer with 57 seconds left to put his squad ahead, 89-52.
Michael Stayne paced Valley Forge with 17 points off the bench. Nate Stoner finished with 11.
For CNU, Taylor scored a career-high 23 on 10-of-12 shooting to go along with five boards to lead the Captains. Davon Barton finished with 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Craig McCargo had 13 and Theo Baker finished with 11.
Valley Forge falls to 10-4 on the year while CNU improves to 1-5. The Captains have the week off for final exams and return to action Monday, December 17 when they travel to Lynchburg with tip set for 7 pm.
