Men's Basketball Runs Past Mount St. Vincent, 80-66

ATLANTA, GA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad concluded 2007 on a positive note by defeating Mount St. Vincent, 80-66, in the third place game of the Stormy Petrel Classic hosted by Oglethorpe University Sunday afternoon.

 

The Captains won the tip and immediately took control by scoring the first 10 points of the game. CNU quickly lead by 22, 27-5, on Paul Going's three-pointer with 10:46 left in the first half.

 

Christopher Newport would take its largest lead, 25, into the locker room at halftime. The Captains were 20-of-30 (67%) from the floor and 9-of-17 (53%) from behind the arc to lead 49-24 at the break. The Dolphins were just 9-of-30 (30%) from the field, 1-of-8 (13%) from long range and 5-of-10 from the line.

 

In the second half, Christopher Newport's largest lead came early on Thomas Whinnett's three with 19:31 left to put CNU up 28. Mount St. Vincent kept the game close but could only get as close as the final margin.

 

For the game, the Dolphins finished 25-of-72 (35%) from the floor, 4-of-17 (24%) from behind the arc and 12-of-22 (55%) from the line.

 

Dino Johnson paced Mount St. Vincent with 17 points. Kenneth Widgeon added 12, Kevin Garlan finished with 11 and Kyle Bryons had 10.

 

The Captains were 31-of-55 (56%) from the field, 10-of-24 (42%) on three-pointer attempts and 8-of-14 (57%) from the line.

 

Theo Baker led CNU with 18 points. Davon Barton finished with 13 and eight assists and Whinnett also had 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Conley Taylor added 11 off the bench.

 

Christopher Newport also out-rebounded the Dolphins, 44-35.

Trinity's Robert Taylor was named the tournament's MVP. Also earning All-Tournament team honors were Trinity's Russ Martin and Luke McDougall, Oglethorpe's Ahmad Kareem Shaheed and CNU's Davon Barton.

 

Mount St. Vincent falls to 3-6 overall as the Captains improve to 2-8. CNU returns to action January 4th when they host Mary Washington at 8 pm on day one of the Captains Shootout.
