PITTSBURGH, PA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad lost 83-63 at Carnegie Mellon Thursday evening.
The Captains led 10-5 early before the Tartans scored 10 straight points to take the lead for good with 14:58 left in the opening stanza. CMU lead 35-27 at the break.
In the second half, CNU trimmed the lead to one, 46-45, on Thomas Whinnett's three-pointer with 13:51 to go, but that would be as close as they would come.
Christopher Newport trailed 66-60 after Davon Barton's lay-up with 7:11 left to go and forced a CMU missed shot. Conley Taylor came down and missed a shot and was whistled for a technical foul. From there, the Tartans finished the game on a 17-3 run for the final margin.
The Captains finished 26-of-64 (41%) from the floor but were just 4-of-14 (29%) from behind the arc and 7-of-14 (50%) from the free throw line.
Carnegie Mellon was 33-of-68 (49%) from the field, 7-of-17 (41%) from long range and 10-of-19 (53%) from the charity stripe.
Barton led Christopher Newport with 21 points and five assists. Whinnett contributed 13 points.
Ryan Einwag paced the Tartans with 28 points and nine rebounds. Jack Anderson finished with 14 points and Shane Rife had 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
CMU out-rebounds the Captains, 51-30.
CNU falls to 1-7 on the year while Carnegie Mellon improves to 5-2. Christopher Newport is off for the next eight days and returns to action Saturday, December 28 when they travel to Atlanta, GA for the Oglethorpe Classic. CNU will take on Trinity (CT) at 2 pm.
