NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's volleyball team swept Greensboro 3-0 Saturday afternoon to capture the USA South Tournament title and a bid into the NCAA Tournament.
It's the fifth time the Captains have captured the USA South Tournament championship since the 2001 season.
The Captains won by scores of 30-19, 30-26 and 30-11.
CNU was paced by Allie Wolfe's 14 kills and five digs. Liz Bush finished with 12 kills and five block solos. Bush had her 12 kills on 20 attempts with just one error for a .550 hitting percentage.
Brittany Collins eclipsed the 5,000-assist mark, needing 29 coming in, she finished with 35 on the afternoon. Ellen Koch contributed nine kills and Christie Kirby added 17 digs.
For Greensboro, Michelle Gabson led the way with 10 kills and six digs. Bridget McCaskill finished with 15 digs and Kacie Hyatt added 11. Joy Daniels posted 18 assists.
Averett's Samantha Kirby, Greensboro's Gabson and Hyatt were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Christopher Newport's Koch, Bush, and Wolfe were also named to the All-Tournament Team. CNU's Collins was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Greensboro finishes 2007 with a record of 23-16. CNU improves to 32-6. The Captains will find out who they will play Sunday night when the NCAA Tournament begins this Thursday. Check the official website of CNU Athletics for the NCAA pairings when they are released Sunday night.
