Mens Basketball Drops An 88-84 Decision To Wesley (DE)

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball squad dropped its fourth straight Wednesday night as they fell 88-84 to Wesley (DE) at the Freeman Center.

 

Leading 42-35 at the break, the Wolverines quickly took a double digit lead with 15:51 to go on Paul Gibbs' lay-up that put them up 53-42. The Captains responded with a 19-10 run to cut the lead to two, 63-61, on Kenny Reid's lay-up with 8:39 left in the game.

 

Wesley countered by going on a 16-5 run to extend its lead to 13, its largest of the game, 79-66, with 3:31 left. CNU would not go quietly as they scored 16 of the next 20 points to cut the lead down to one, 83-82, on Davon Barton's three-pointer with 43 seconds to go.

 

After a Wolverine lay-up, the Captains came down the floor and Craig McCargo's cross-court pass was picked off by Evan Martin, essentially sealing the win for Wesley.

 

It was back and forth early in the first half as the game was tied at 5-5 early before Wesley scored five straight. CNU countered and tied the game at 16-16 with 13:25 to go in the first n Thomas Whinnett's 3-pointer.

 

The Wolverines would eventually lead by as many as 11 in the opening stanza, 38-27, with 2:24 remaining in the half. Christopher Newport whittled the lead back down to five with 10 seconds to go, 40-35, but Wesley's Gibbs went the length of the court and his lay-up counted as it went in at the buzzer.

 

For the game, Wesley finished 32-of-63 (51%) from the field, but hit just 4-of-18 (22%) from behind the arc. The Wolverines finished 20-of-28 (71%) from the stripe.

 

Rashawn Johnson paced all players with 34 points on 13-of-23 shooting and 6-of-10 from the foul line. Martin added 13 points.

 

The Captains shot 32-of-60 (53%) from the floor, including 8-of-22 (36%) from downtown but were just 12-of-23 (52%) from the charity stripe.

 

Barton paced CNU with his first double-double of the year, finishing with 18 points and 11 assists. He was 5-of-6 from the floor, including nailing all three 3-pointers he took. Whinnett added 17 points and six boards, McCargo finished with 15 off the bench, Theo Baker contributed 11 points and Marko Hamlin had 10.

 

Wesley is now 2-1 on the year and Christopher Newport falls to 0-4. CNU returns to action next Wednesday when the travel to Randolph-Macon with tip set for 7 pm.
