Men's Basketball Falls 85-74 To Curry

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's men's basketball team dropped its third straight game, falling 85-74 to Curry on day two of the CNU Invitational Saturday night.

 

CNU led 4-0 early but Curry took the lead for good with 17:32 left in the first on James Bartelle's three-pointer to give the Colonels a 7-4 lead. Curry led 46-34 at the break.

 

In the second half, the Colonels led by as many as 25, 80-55, with 6:33 left in the game. Christopher Newport trimmed the lead to as few as 11, the final margin.

 

Curry shot 31-of-56 (55%) from the field and was 11-of-20 (55%) from behind the three-point arc. The finished 12-of-21 (57%) from the free throw line.

 

Tim Jones led the Colonels with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jonathon Bowers added 23 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Bartelle added 15 points and nine boards and Mark Mastrullo contributed 13 points.

 

For CNU, the Captains finished 29-of-71 (41%) from the floor, 10-of-33 (30%) from behind the arc and 6-of-7 (86%) from the stripe.

 

Theo Baker finished with 19 points and Thomas Whinnett added 18 and eight boards. Marko Hamlin finished with 12 and Davon Barton added 11 and six assists.

 

Curry improves to 3-2 overall and the Captains fall to 0-3. CNU returns to action Wednesday when they host Wesley (DE) at 7 pm.
