BOSTON, Mass. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team captured a 3-0 win over William Paterson University this week and was leading, 2-0, against Rutgers-Camden in a game that could not be completed; in both, senior goalkeeper Matt Yates kept the talented New Jersey-based squads off the board and was consequently named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Defeensive Player of the Week. 

Yates joins Riley Usher, who was named the C2C Offensive Player of the Week last week, as honored players for the CNU men's soccer team this season. He earns his first career Player of the Week certificate with his performance between the pipes this weekend. 

The Captains' senior goalkeeper made a highlight-reel save late in the action against Rutgers-Camden when the Scarlet Raptors got loose down the right side. Facing a one-on-one opportunity, Yates made a brilliant kick save to stone the shot and hold Rutgers-Camden scoreless. Then, in the second game of the weekend, he logged over 83 minutes of shutout soccer. Again, he stood tall in a big moment when he made a fully extended diving stop to keep the Pioneers off the board in the first half. 

For the week, he made six saves as CNU improved to 3-0-0. 

Christopher Newport will return to Captains Field this weekend as they play host to Mount Union on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m.
