Captains Conclude Regular Season with Sunday Softball Doubleheader vs. Salisbury

Live Video  //  Game Program

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University wraps up the 2026 regular season on Sunday afternoon when the Captains host the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. The softball doubleheader at Captains Park is set to start at 1:30 p.m.

The Captains are 26-10 on the season, and have won six straight games. Keith Parr's squad is coming off a sweep last Saturday at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Salisbury enters the twin bill with a 23-13 mark, and the Sea Gulls split a pair of games on Wednesday with Catholic in Salisbury, Md. The loss in the second game snapped a five-game SU winning streak.

The Captains and Salisbury have played 106 games in their long-running series, and the Captains hold a 56-48 edge with two ties. CNU has won the last seven games with the Gulls. Last season, the squads met three times, and the Captains captured all three. CNU swept a doubleheader in Salisbury, Md., and then won a game over the Gulls in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at Captains Park. The series dates back to 1989.

Sophomore Caroline Alger has given the Captains a lift in the pitching circle of late. Alger earned a victory and a save in CNU's doubleheader sweep at Mary Washington. She threw her second straight complete game shutout in the opener, allowing just three hits while striking out eight, and then tossed the final two innings of the nightcap to earn her second save of the season. Alger is now 5-0 and has an earned run average of just 1.12. She missed almost two months of the season from mid February until her return on April 12th, and has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the last three weeks since returning to action.

Christopher Newport is currently third in the country in home runs per game with 1.25. CNU has hit 45 home runs in the first 36 games, and junior Simone Thompson leads the way with ten followed by junior Brooke Zuber with nine and junior Natalie Quinlan with eight. Junior Candace Slaw tops the team in hitting with an average of  at .485, and is presently tied for seventh in the nation in base hits with 64. Slaw also tops the Captains in runs scored with 44, and doubles with 11. Zuber has knocked in a team-high 39 runs.Sophomore Alexah Gordon leads the team in stolen bases with 36 in 36 attempts, and has upped her average to .477 behind only Slaw.

In between games of the doubleheader, Christopher Newport will retire three uniform numbers of CNU softball greats. Pitcher Jamie Martin will have her #28 retired, as will pitcher Kate Alger, who wore #6. Third baseman Brooke Greaver will also have her uniform number 32 retired in the ceremony. All three CNU greats had their careers come to an end last season.
