Captains Host Softball Senior Day Doubleheader Sunday...Game Time Changed to 2 PM

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University hosts a softball twin bill Sunday afternoon at Captains Park. It will be Senior Day as CNU takes on Roanoke College, with first pitch now set for 2:00 p.m. Prior to the first pitch, seniors Isabel Hall and Mia Aiello will be honored for their hard work and dedication to the program, with the pre-game ceremony set to take place at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Keith Parr's team is 22-10 on the year and coming off a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday at North Carolina Wesleyan University in Rocky Mount, N.C. CNU won the opener, 10-2 in five innings, and then held on to take the nightcap, 6-3. Roanoke, meanwhile, has a record of 16-14 heading into a busy weekend of action. The Maroons were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday at Bridgewater College, followed by the Sunday action at Captains Park. The Maroons have won six of their last seven heading into the weekend.

The Captains and Roanoke have played 34 times in the past, and CNU holds a 24-10 edge in the all-time series, which dates back to 1997. The teams split a doubleheader last season in Salem, Va.

Christopher Newport is currently second in the country in home runs per game with 1.28. CNU has hit 41 home runs in the first 32 games, and juniors Brooke Zuber and Simone Thompson lead the way with nine each. Two members of the Captains are currently hitting over the .500 mark 32 games into the season. Senior Isabel Hall has posted a .509 mark so far, and junior Candace Slaw is right behind her at .508. Slaw is presently second in the nation in base hits with 60, and also tops the Captains in runs scored with 41, doubles with ten, and stolen bases (28 on 30 attempts). Zuber not only is tied for the team lead in home runs with nine but also has knocked in a team-high 37 runs.

Following Sunday's games, the Captains have just two doubleheaders left in the regular season. CNU will travel to Fredericksburg, Va., next Saturday, April 25th, to take on the University of Mary Washington. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. CNU returns home to conclude the regular season at Captains Park on Sunday, May 3rd, vs. Salisbury University.The opening game of two is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start. The Captains will play in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday, May 8th, with the site and opponent to be determined.
