NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University junior
Haylee Callahan was named the Softball Pitcher of the Week Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Callahan, who saw action in three games for the ninth-ranked Captains this week, picked up a victory and a save as CNU registered a 3-3 week.
Keith Parr's Captains are now 6-4 on the season.
A native of King George, Va. and graduate of King George High School, Callahan pitched 15.2 innings with six strikeouts in three appearances. She posted a victory in CNU's 7-2 win over Muhlenberg College on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C. in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic, going the distance while allowing just two runs and scattering ten hits over seven frames. Just a day later on Sunday, Callahan entered the game in relief against William Peace University, and earned her first save of the season. She pitched the final three innings, and did not allow a run while giving up just one hit as the Captains registered a 3-2 triumph.
This is the second Pitcher of the Week honor in three weeks for the Captains to open the season. Callahan follows teammate
Caroline Alger, who received the accolade on February 23rd. The Captains have also been honored twice with Player of the Week honors, as
Natalie Quinlan and
Cora Thomas have been celebrated for their outstanding play early in the season.
Christopher Newport will return to action in the Cross Bay Bash this weekend at Captains Park. CNU will play two games each day, taking on the University of Rochester (11:00 a.m.) and Southern Virginia University (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday, March 14th, and Rochester (1:30 p.m.) and Susquehanna University (4:00 p.m.) on Sunday, March 15th.
