Christopher Newport Drops Two in Softball Doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Captains of Christopher Newport University suffered two road losses Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan University's Broyles Field. The Marlins, ranked second in the nation, defeated the ninth-ranked Captains in the opener, 8-0 in six innings, and then took the nightcap in five innings, 15-2. CNU fell to 3-3 with the losses, while VWU upped its record to 4-0 to start the season.

The Captains were no-hit in the opener by VWU's Hannah Hearl, reaching base only twice on a walk and an error in the 8-0 defeat. CNU posted eight hits in the nightcap, producing two runs in the 15-2 loss. Juniors Candace Slaw and Katrina Swan registered two singles each, and Slaw and junior Natalie Quinlan recorded the runs batted in.

CNU starters Haylee Callahan, now 1-1, and Cora Grace Sparger, now 1-2, took the losses for the Captains on a sunny and mild day in Virginia Beach.

Keith Parr's squad travels to Raleigh, N.C., this weekend for the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. CNU will play Tufts University on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. start, and will then play Muhlenberg College later in the day at 4:00 p.m. The Captains will then play Sunday against William Peace University (12 noon) and Sweet Briar College (2:30 p.m.).
