NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Fresh off a pair of victories at the Freeman Center to open the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament this weekend, Christopher Newport University will next travel to Ashland, Va., to take on Randolph-Macon College. The game, in the round of 16, will be played at Crenshaw Gymnasium Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
The Captains are 23-5 and defeated Stevens Institute of Technology Friday and Washington & Jefferson Saturday at the Freeman Center to open NCAA play. Randolph-Macon also hosted the first two rounds, beating North Carolina Wesleyan and the College of New Jersey in Ashland. The Yellow Jackets are now 27-3, and have won all 15 of their home games this season.
"I think it's going to be a great college basketball game," Head Coach
John Krikorian said Saturday night. "Two great Virginia programs matching up in the NCAA Tournament, this is the kind of pairing you hope to see. We have a lot of respect for their program, and there's great familiarity...it should be an exciting night."
CNU and Randolph-Macon have played twice before in the NCAA Tournament, splitting a pair of games in the opening round of the tourney in 1996 and 1999 at Ratcliffe Gymnasium on the CNU campus. The Captains opened their home schedule this year vs. the Yellow Jackets on November 12th at the Freeman Center, a game won by R-MC, 71-65. It proved to be the only home loss of the season for Krikorian's team, as the Captains have since won 14 straight games on their home floor.
The series with Randolph-Macon dates back to 1977, and includes a total of 34 head-to-head clashes. The first nine were played while Randolph-Macon was a Division II program, and all nine games were won by the Yellow Jackets. Since R-MC moved into Division III, and schools have met 25 times, and the Yellow Jackets hold a 13-12 edge in the series.
