Captains Travel to Bridgewater for Wednesday Softball Doubleheader vs. Eagles

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -
Christopher Newport University continues a road swing on Wednesday as the Captains travel to Bridgewater, Va., to take on the Eagles of Bridgewater College. First pitch for the opening game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Captains are 17-7 on the season, and are coming off a split on Sunday at York College of Pennsylvania. CNU lost the opener in eight innings, 8-7, but recovered to win the nightcap by a 13-5 score in five innings. 

Christopher Newport currently is fourth in the country in home runs per game (1.38) as CNU has smacked 33 in the first 24 games. The Captains are also seventh in the country in runs per game (8.5) as CNU has plated 204 runs in 24 games to date. Juniors Brooke Zuber and Natalie Quinlan have led the way in home runs with six each. CNU has two players hitting over the .500 mark for the year, as senior Isabel Hall (.531) and junior Candace Slaw (.511) lead the way. Slaw tops the squad in runs scored with 29, as well as stolen bases, having swiped 22 bases in 23 attempts.

The Eagles of Bridgewater College have a record of 18-6 entering Wednesday's action, and are 10-2 at home this season after falling twice to top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday by scores of 4-2 and 10-4.  CNU and Bridgewater have played 34 games in a series that dates back to 1991. The Captains hold a 23-11 edge in the all-time series, and Christopher Newport has won the last eight games, including two last year on March 27th at Captains Park by scores of 8-2 and 3-1.
