Softball Sweeps Weekly Honors from C2C as Candace Slaw and Cora Grace Sparger Receive Accolades

NEWPORT NEWS - The Christopher Newport University softball squad improved its record to 15-5 over the weekend, and the Captains received two honors Monday from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C). Junior centerfielder and leadoff hitter Candace Slaw was selected the league's Player of the Week for the first time this season, and freshman lefthander Cora Grace Sparger was named the conference Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week.

Keith Parr's squad swept a pair of games on Friday over Greensboro College before splitting a doubleheader Sunday with Randolph-Macon College at Captains Park.

Slaw, an All-American last year as a sophomore,  hit .542 over the week with 13 hits in 24 at-bats including three for extra bases. In six games, she drove in ten runs and scored eight times while adding four stolen bases. Slaw, from Warsaw, Va., logged hits in five of the six games this week including four multi-hit games. In a doubleheader against Greensboro, she recorded a hit in six straight plate appearances and went five-for-five in game one. She drove in five in game one and also posted a 4-RBI game against Randolph earlier in the week. In a wild come-from-behind win against nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon on Sunday, Slaw drove in the sixth run in an eight-run final frame. She also scored the game-winning run on a walk-off double by Katrina Swan, marking her eighth run of the week.Slaw is now boasting a batting average of .521 through the first 20 games of the season for Christopher Newport.

Sparger, meanwhile, started three games and appeared in four during the week for the Captains, who were ranked 15th in the nation last week. She earned wins against Randolph, Greensboro, and  Randolph-Macon during the Week. The product of Salem, Va., struck out 17 batters, including a season-high eight in a win against Randolph that saw her scatter four hits and allow just one unearned run. She came out of the bullpen in game two of the doubleheader against Randolph-Macon Sunday and earned the win with four innings of work in her first ever relief appearance. Sparger's season numbers in her freshman campaign show an impressive record of 8-3.

CNU returns to action on Thursday in Danville, Va., as the Captains play a twin bill at Averett University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
