NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University sophomore second baseman
Cora Thomas was named the Player of the Week Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Thomas and the tenth-ranked Captains split a doubleheader on Saturday at Captains Park with 12th-ranked Moravian University.
Thomas posted five hits in eight at bats Saturday for a .625 batting average and also reached base on a walk and stole a base in the twin bill at Captains Park. She went two-for-four in the opener, and three-for-four in the nightcap, crushing her first home run of the season, a two-run shot. Thomas, the Rookie of the Year in the C2C last season, delivered the game-winning hit in the opener. In a tie game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, she jumped on a 1-0 pitch and laced it inside the third-base bag to allow the winning run to cruise home.
This marks the second straight week the Captains have been honored with a Player of the Week nod. Last week,
Natalie Quinlan of the Captains received the honor.
Keith Parr's squad is now 3-1 on the season, and will travel to Virginia Beach on Wednesday for a twin bill at Virginia Wesleyan University. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
