NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University hosts the Greyhounds of Moravian University in the first home softball games of the new season. The doubleheader at Captains Park Saturday is set to begin at 12 noon.

The Captains are 2-0 so far and swept a doubleheader at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. to open the season on February 14th. The Captains won the opening game by a 6-3 score, and then downed the Monarchs in the nightcap, 14-2, in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. In all, Keith Parr's squad scored 20 runs on 24 base hits in the two road victories at Price Field.

Junior catcher/first baseman Natalie Quinlan was named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week and sophomore Caroline Alger was selected the Pitcher of the Week following the season-opening sweep. Quinlan, from Manassas, Va., hit two home runs and went three-for-five in the doubleheader vs. the Monarchs. She hit a pair of two-run home runs in the opening game, and then delivered an RBI single in the nightcap in her only official at bat of the game. Quinlan ended the day with five runs batted in. Alger, a sophomore from Staunton, Va., made her Captains debut and retired all 14 batters she faced in the opening game at Methodist. She earned the victory by striking out five in 4.2 innings of work.

Christopher Newport University is ranked tenth in the nation in the pre-season poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). CNU was ranked as high as second in the country during the season last year. The poll is selected by ten NCAA Division III head coaches representing the ten NCAA regions. The Captains were ranked ninth in the pre-season poll last year.

Moravian has not seen action yet this season. The Greyhounds are coming off a very impressive 40-9 final record last year, falling to Randolph-Macon College in the NCAA Tournament Super Regional round in Bethlehem, Pa. The Captains and Greyhounds have played six games in all, and CNU has a 4-2 all-time record in the series. The squads met for the first time in 20 years early in the season last year, with the Captains posting an 8-5 victory at Captains Park in the Cross Bay Bash on March 15th.
