NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University softball swept the weekly awards Monday from the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference. Junior outfielder
Simone Thompson was named the Player of the Week by the conference, and freshman
Cora Grace Sparger was selected the Pitcher of the Week.
Thompson, from Germantown, Md., hit .538 to lead the Captains to four straight wins over the weekend in the Cross Bay Bash at Captains Park. For the weekend, she posted seven hits, scored eight runs, and tallied nine RBI's.
Sparger, from Salem, Va., was 2-0 and threw a shutout on Sunday vs. Susquehanna in the Cross Bay Bash. She struck out four and allowed just one earned run in 12 innings of work as she registered victories over Southern Virginia and Susquehanna.
Thompson joins teammates
Natalie Quinlan and
Cora Thomas on the list of C2C Players of the Week this season. Sparger is also the third different CNU pitcher to take the weekly pitching honor already this season, joining
Caroline Alger and
Haylee Callahan.
CNU has now won seven straight games and is 10-4 on the season. The Captains return to action on Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va., when CNU takes on Randolph College in a doubleheader. The first pitch of the twin bill is set for 2:00 p.m. The Captains return home on Friday to host Greensboro College in a 1:00 p.m. start at Captains Park.
