SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Christopher Newport sophomore
Taylor Davis (-1) set the program scoring record for a round and 36-hole tournament to highlight another record-breaking performance by the CNU Women's Golf Team at the 2026 Savannah Invitational. As a team, CNU wrapped up its sixth top-ten finish in seven events this year.
The 2025-26 season continues to be a banner year for the Captains as the Savannah Invitational performance enters the record book amongst some of the best tournaments and single-round performances in program history. With a thirty-over 614 (305-309), the Captains tied for the second- and third-lowest Par 73 round scores in program history. The 36-hole tournament total ranks second lowest in both total strokes and in relation par, ranking second only to the record-setting 603 at the Transylvania Kickoff Classic earlier this year.Â
On an individual level, Davis set a new program record in relation to par (-3) and tied the program mark overall for total strokes in the second round. She fired a three-under 70 to lower the previous program record for a single-round on a Par 73 track by two.
Gabi McGehee set the record with a one-under 72 in the Transylvania Kickoff in the Fall, while
Elena Rezac's Even par performance in the 2024 Lynn Schweizer Invitational was the record prior to 2025-26.Â
Additionally, Davis matched All-American Erica Whitehouse for the finest single round scoring performance by a sophomore and is the only other second-year player to notch a round under par. It's the second round under par of the season for a Captain and only the eighth in program history. She joins an exclusive list that includes McGehee, Whitehouse, Shreya Ganta, Lauren Sims, and
Ayla Browning.Â
Her historic performance moved her into a top-ten finish as she tied for 10th with a one-under 145 (75-70). That is the lowest score in the history of the program dating back to the inaugural 2017-18 campaign. She broke the record for a 36-hole tournament, shared by McGehee, Ganta, Browning, and Whitehouse, by two strokes.
Davis started the day on the seventh hole with a par-bogey before kickstarting a historic run with a birdie three on the 343-yard par four ninth hole. Dominating the back nine, the sophomore sank eight pars and added her second birdie of the day with a two on the 132-yard par three 15th. She then attacked the first six holes of the course with four more pars and two birdies, on the 324-yard par four 2nd and the 445-yard par five 4th. She finished the day with four birdies, 13 pars, and just one bogey. It was tied for the best individual performance in the second round.Â
Adding to Davis' historic individual performance, the rest of the CNU lineup helped contribute to the strong overall team effort. Senior
Katie Watson shot a two-over 75 on day one before finishing in 45th place with an eight-over 154 (75-79). Rookie
Sara McCaskill (+12) added a 158 (81-77) to finish in 59th place; senior
Julia Pelletier (+14) shot a 160 (77-83), and;
Maddie Cameron (+15) finished 72nd with a 161 (78-83). All five players chipped in counting scores over the two-day event.Â
Watson led all CNU players with 25 pars over 36 holes while Pelletier also dropped in 23. McCaskill dropped in four birdies on Tuesday and Cameron recorded three through the two-day event.
Christopher Newport will look to continue its strong play at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate from March 20-22. The three-day 54-hole event will be hosted at Great Dunes in Georgia.Â
