NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University junior
Toa Hollenbeck was honored Monday by the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C), named the league's Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Hollenbeck set a new Freeman Center record for scoring last Wednesday night, pouring in 43 points as the 12th-ranked Captains defeated the second-ranked Eagles of the University of Mary Washington, 86-77. The Chesapeake product scored 17 points in the opening half, and followed with 26 in the second half to account for exactly half of his team's scoring in the game. Hollenbeck made six-of-nine shots from three-point range, and also knocked down all 13 free throws he attempted. The victory was CNU's tenth straight, and 17th in the last 18 games.
The graduate of Grassfield High School moved up to 24th on Christopher Newport's all-time scoring list, and has now scored 1,158 points in 80 career games as a Captain (14.5 points per game). The 43-point effort is tied for the third-highest single game scoring total in the 58-year history of CNU men's basketball, behind only Ted Berry's 47-point game at Salisbury University in 1993 and Conley Taylor's 44-point effort at Frostburg State University in 2010. Hollenbeck matched the 43-point game of Steve Artis vs. Greensboro College at Ratcliffe Gymnasium in 1992.
Hollenbeck is now averaging 19.5 points per game this season, and has led the team in scoring in 12 of 21 games and six of the last seven.
Christopher Newport, now 18-3, returns to action on Wednesday night, as the Captains travel to Maryland to take on the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Maggs Center.
