Jamie Smith Celebrated as Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week

PITMAN, N.J. -- Following another historic eruption for the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team, Jamie Smith was named the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.

The weekly award was the first of Smith's career. He also became the second Captain to receive a league-wide honor this season after Mason Bellinger was named the Defensive Player of the Week on February 9.

In the team's lone appearance last weekend, Smith made the most of his time on the field after depositing six goals during a 16-9 victory over No. 9 Gettysburg. His six tallies equaled the 10th-highest total in program history and the third-most by a Captain against a nationally-ranked opponent.

During a back-and-forth battle against the Bullets, Smith stole the show. In the second quarter, he broke a 3-3 deadlock with his first strike of the contest before notching another goal just before halftime, which handed CNU a 7-5 advantage. After the break, he returned to the field and stole the momentum with an epic run in the third period.

Although Gettysburg knotted the game at seven early in the second half, Smith had an answer. The senior All-American drove home back-to-back goals in less than a minute of action, which gave the Captains a lead they would never relinquish. Shortly thereafter, he added his fifth goal at the end of the stanza before rounding out his day with the final nail in the fourth quarter, which iced the 16-9 victory.

In the end, Smith finished with six goals on just eight shots while chipping in with a pair of ground balls.

Named a consensus Preseason All-American before the start of the 2026 campaign, Smith has more than lived up to that billing during Christopher Newport's first three games. So far this season, he ranks third in the NCAA with 15 goals. In addition to his six-point outburst against Gettysburg on Saturday, he had seven tallies in the opener against Elizabethtown and a pair of strikes at Hampden-Sydney.

An All-American last year, Smith set a new school record and led the NCAA with 84 goals during his junior campaign. In his career, he ranks ninth in program history with 106 tallies, while his 3.31 goals-per-game rate is the highest by a Captain.

Smith and the rest of his teammates will return to action on Wednesday when Christopher Newport hosts No. 12 Washington and Lee in the ninth annual Virginia Lacrosse the Nations Cup at 6 p.m.
