NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University freshman defensive back
Jayden Miller was honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) on Monday. Miller was named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Week for the second time this season following the Captains exciting 13-12 home victory Saturday over Rowan University. The hard-fought win moved the Captains into sole possession of first place in the NJAC standings.
Miller, from Lynchurg, Va., recorded seven tackles and broke up two passes in the thrilling victory. Miller's play with just three seconds remaining sealed the victory for Christopher Newport, as he broke up a two-point conversion pass. The play, if successful, would have given the Profs a one-point win. Instead, the Captains registered their 23rd consecutive regular-season victory, the longest current streak in the country.
Paul Crowley's team improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 atop the NJAC standings. The Captains can wrap up the league title on Saturday with a victory. CNU hosts the Lions of the College of New Jersey (TCNJ) at TowneBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m., and it will be Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day as the Captains conclude their regular season home schedule.
Tickets for Saturday's game are available at the CNU Athletic Ticket Office located inside the Freeman Center, which is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can also call the office at 757-594-7880 for more information.Â
